Der Band vereint die Ergebnisse zweier Tagungen in Paris und Dresden, die sich mit dem ambivalenten, zwischen Kunstwerk und Reproduktion changierenden Charakter der Druckgraphik und der Vielfalt ihrer Funktionen seit dem 16. Jahrhundert beschäftigt haben. Besondere Beachtung finden dabei einerseits Strategien des Um- und Überschreibens, der Inszenierung und Repräsentation, andererseits innovative technische Erfindungen, theoretische Diskurse zur Einbettung der Graphik in das System der artes liberales sowie das exemplarische Verhältnis von Vor- und Abbild. Die Beiträge spannen einen weiten Bogen von den Autonomiebestrebungen der graphisch tätigen Künstler, die um 1660 mit der Befreiung von den Regeln der Zunft einen Höhepunkt erlebten, bis hin zu den Erneuerungen und Entwicklungen der Technik im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert.
