While in Mexico, the kids discover who they are and what is really important to them through all manner of mishaps; getting their VW bus stuck in a sand bank, stepping on jelly fish, VW bus gas line breaking, all their stuff getting stolen by the Mexican mafia, having to get it back by confronting the head of the mafia and dealing with sharks. Through all the persevering, they discover the true meaning of friendship.
