Don strong, patrol leader opens as a boys' adventure novel set in the early decades of the twentieth century, following the experiences of Don Strong, a young scout eager to prove himself as a dependable leader. The story centres on the Wolf Patrol, whose members must choose a new leader after the departure of their former patrol head, and the chance to win the Scoutmaster's Cup that hangs over all their efforts. The narrative begins with lively dialogues among the boys, highlighting the contrast between Don's thoughtful, disciplined approach and Tim Lally's impulsive, hot-headed ambition to lead. As the competition is announced, the book foregrounds the tension between individual rivalry and collective teamwork, forcing Don to weigh responsibility, fairness, and peer pressure. Through camp-fire chats, practice drills, and skirmishes within the patrol, the novel explores themes of leadership under pressure, the value of self-control, the importance of loyalty, and the delicate balance between ambition and humility in shaping character among boys learning to shoulder real responsibility.
