This impactful and thought-provoking memoir explores one man's quest to achieve a dignified, comfortable existence despite his limitations and awareness of the demands of the world he inherited.
Born with dyspraxia, a neuropsychological condition characterized by various psychomotor and cognitive impairments, Allan White was not diagnosed until well into adulthood after being diagnosed-possibly incorrectly-with ADHD years earlier.
By sheer chance, Mr. White became aware of different learning disabilities in late adolescence, quickly realizing that he was likely neurodivergent, even though he had been undiagnosed prior. Although many barriers initially prevented him from obtaining an official diagnosis until years later, his newfound self-awareness marked the beginning of a journey of self-discovery and finding an optimal life niche relative to his limitations.
Early in his journey, Allan developed a passion for anthropology and primitive technologies, particularly in crafting stone tools known as flintknapping. This self-directed pursuit provided Allan with focus and a sense of empowerment, which later influenced his political radicalization as a neurodivergent individual after years of struggling to integrate into society.
Join him on his journey from his misguided early adult attempts to withdraw from society to his efforts to integrate, his subsequent political radicalization as a neurodivergent person, and his eventual discovery of stability and peace through alternative means.
Disrupted Pathways is a critique of neoliberalism that challenges readers to reexamine popular notions of talent, competency, and meritocracy and the purpose these definitions serve.
