Das Buch analysiert erstmals die Rezeption des Werkes Jean-François Millets (1814-1875) in Deutschland von der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis hin zur Ära des Nationalsozialimus in Abhängigkeit von den jeweiligen kulturellen, politischen und historischen Rahmenbedingungen. Dabei rücken nicht nur die Kunstliteratur, sondern auch die Sammlungsaktivitäten sowie der Konsum von Massenreproduktionen als ma gebliche Elemente des Transfers ins Blickfeld. Es wird deutlich, dass Millets Popularität in Deutschland nur zum Teil mit der zunehmenden Akzeptanz von Realismus und Impressionismus zu erklären ist. Vor allem die Germanenideologie und Agrarromantik trugen um 1900 dazu bei, den Franzosen zum germanischen Bauernmaler zu stilisieren, womit sich ein spezifisch deutscher Künstlermythos entwickelte. Deutschland und Millet richtet das Augenmerk auf diese ideologisch gefärbten Rezeptionsvorgänge, die den Realisten zu einer Projektions- und Identifikationsfigur ersten Ranges avancieren lie en.
