Jara Winter ist neu an der Falkenauer Gesamtschule. Sie kennt die unausgesprochenen Regeln längst: Nicht zu lange stehen bleiben. Nicht auffallen. Keine Angriffsfläche bieten. Doch nach einem Starkregen ist der Bach nicht mehr derselbe.
Das Wasser ist braun und schwer. Die Strömung stockt. Unter den Steinen, wo sonst winzige Bachtiere leben, bleibt es verdächtig still. Erst wirkt alles wie eine Kleinigkeit, die man übersehen könnte. Ein bisschen Schlamm. Ein verstopfter Durchlass. Ein paar tote Larven. Doch Jara sieht genauer hin - und erkennt, dass der Bach ein Muster erzählt.
Gemeinsam mit Levin, der aus jeder Beobachtung eine Messreihe machen will, und Mila, die sich nicht so leicht einschüchtern lässt, beginnt Jara zu dokumentieren, was andere abtun. Sie zeichnen Karten, messen Strömung, vergleichen Wasserstellen und folgen den Spuren von Regen, Schlamm, Schatten und Schweigen.
Aber je näher sie dem Problem kommen, desto unbequemer wird ihre Entdeckung.
Denn am Silberbach soll ein neuer Naturpfad entstehen. Ein schönes Projekt. Ein öffentliches Projekt. Ein Projekt, das niemand infrage stellen will. Schon gar nicht wegen drei Jugendlichen mit einem Pirateneimer, einem Ententhermometer und einer Karte voller Fragezeichen.
Als Jara zu früh glaubt, die Ursache gefunden zu haben, gerät sie selbst unter Druck. Plötzlich geht es nicht mehr nur um den Bach, sondern um Gerüchte, Verantwortung, falsche Verdächtigungen und die Frage, wie man weitermacht, wenn man einen Fehler gemacht hat.
Der Silberbach hat keinen einfachen Täter. Er hat Zusammenhänge. Engstellen. fehlenden Schatten. Wasserwege, die niemand beachtet hat. Und eine leise Warnung, die nur hörbar wird, wenn jemand lange genug hinsieht.
