De Rerum Natura, or On the Nature of Things, is a first-century BCE didactic poem by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius. Written in Latin, the poem explicates the philosophy of Epicureanism. Addressed to Memmius, a Roman nobleman, the six books explore physics, metaphysics, and ethics from a materialistic point of view, emphasizing the absence of divine intervention in natural phenomena and advocating for an understanding of the universe based on observation and reason. Lucretius aims to free humanity from the fear of death and the gods by revealing the natural causes of events. His work is celebrated for its poetic beauty and philosophical depth, making it a cornerstone of classical literature and a significant source for understanding Epicurean thought.
