The dwarf crocodile belongs to the order Crocodylia, a lineage of large semiaquatic reptiles that has persisted for over 80 million years with relatively little structural change. Within this order, dwarf crocodiles are members of the family Crocodylidae, which includes true crocodiles, as distinct from alligators and gharials. The genus Osteolaemus is unique within this family due to its small body size, heavily armored body, and ecological specialization for forested freshwater systems rather than open rivers or estuaries.
Scientifically, the dwarf crocodile is classified as follows: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Reptilia, Order Crocodylia, Family Crocodylidae, Genus Osteolaemus. For much of scientific history, the genus was considered monotypic, containing a single species, Osteolaemus tetraspis. This assumption persisted because dwarf crocodiles show relatively subtle external differences compared to larger crocodilian species, and early taxonomic work relied heavily on limited museum specimens and surface-level morphology.
