Duty of A Union Soldier in the Civil War tells the powerful and personal story of Private George Goodrich, a Union soldier from Constantia in Oswego County, New York, who answered his nation's call during the darkest years of the American Civil War.
Born in January 1837 in the quiet farming community of Constantia, George Goodrich grew up in the rugged snow country of upstate New York where hard work, faith, and responsibility shaped the character of young men. Like thousands of others across the North, his life changed forever when the Civil War erupted in 1861.
Leaving behind family and home, Goodrich enlisted as a private in Company K of the 110th New York Infantry Regiment. His service first brought him to Baltimore, Maryland, a city deeply divided in its loyalties. Stationed at Patterson Park and Federal Hill, Goodrich and his fellow soldiers helped secure one of the Union's most strategic cities, guarding the harbor, railroads, and vital supply routes that connected Washington, D.C. to the North.
But Baltimore was only the beginning.
The 110th New York Infantry soon moved south to join the Union campaigns in Louisiana under General Nathaniel P. Banks. There the regiment marched through the swamps and bayous of the Gulf Coast, fighting in the Louisiana Campaign, the Battle of Fort Bisland, and the Battle of Vermilion Bayou before taking part in one of the most critical operations of the Civil War - the Siege of Port Hudson in 1863. With the fall of Port Hudson and the Union victory at Vicksburg, the Mississippi River came fully under Union control, splitting the Confederacy in two.
Through heat, disease, exhaustion, and battle, Private George Goodrich served faithfully alongside his fellow soldiers.
After the war ended, he returned to the town where he was born, living the rest of his life in Constantia, New York, until his death on July 7, 1913 at the age of seventy-six.
This book brings to life the experience of an ordinary Union soldier whose quiet service helped preserve the United States. Through historical detail, military history, and the story of one man's duty, Duty of A Union Soldier in the Civil War reminds readers that the fate of a nation often rests in the hands of soldiers whose names are rarely recorded in history books.
It is the story of courage, endurance, and the lasting legacy of a Union soldier who stood his watch when America needed him most.
