Vanuit een cel in de Wayland-gevangenis levert Roger Hallam - boer, onderzoeker en medeoprichter van Just Stop Oil - een vernietigende aanklacht tegen een rechtssysteem dat degenen straft die zich verzetten, terwijl het degenen beschermt die vernietigen. In juli 2024 werd Hallam uit een Britse rechtszaal gesleept omdat hij weigerde te zwijgen over de klimaatcrisis. Voor 'samenzwering tot het veroorzaken van openbare overlast' werd hij veroordeeld tot vijf jaar gevangenisstraf - de zwaarste straf voor burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid in het Verenigd Koninkrijk in de moderne Britse geschiedenis. De zaak haalde de voorpagina's van de kranten en leidde tot wereldwijde verontwaardiging.
Zelfmoord is deels memoires, deels politieke afrekening. Op basis van Hallams bekroonde onderzoek en zijn ervaringen als zijn eigen verdediger in vier processen, legt het boek de morele en juridische tekortkomingen bloot van een samenleving die slaapwandelend afstevent op een catastrofe. Van klimaatwetenschap en het recht van 'overmacht' tot de ineenstorting van democratische normen en de illusies van seculiere rationaliteit: dit is een radicale oproep om rechtvaardigheid, waarheid en plicht te heroverwegen in het licht van de dreigende uitsterving.
