Avraham Perlmutter is pas tien jaar oud als zijn leven voorgoed verandert.
In 1938 bereiken de nazi's Avrahams geboortestad Wenen. Wanhopig om hun zoon te redden, sturen zijn ouders hem naar Nederland, maar het binnenvallende Duitse leger volgt een korte tijd later. Tijdens de daaropvolgende oorlogsjaren trotseert de jonge Avraham arrestaties, gewaagde ontsnappingen, onderduiken en hartverscheurende verliezen. Het overleven van de Holocaust vergt schranderheid, moed, vastbeslotenheid en een dosis geluk waar hij opnieuw gebruik van maakt wanneer hij vecht voor de staat Israël tijdens haar Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog. Daarop vertrekt hij naar de VS om een academische opleiding te volgen en zijn dromen te laten uitkomen.
