The Dove in the Eagle's Nest is a historical fiction novel written by Charlotte M. Yonge. The story is set in the 16th century in Germany and follows the lives of a noble family, the Baron von Adlerstein, and their interactions with a young Scottish orphan girl named Gertrude. The Baron and his family are known for their fierce loyalty to the Holy Roman Emperor and their castle, the Eagle's Nest, is a stronghold for the Emperor's forces.Gertrude is taken in by the Baron's family and becomes a companion to their daughter, Thekla. As Gertrude grows up, she becomes a valuable member of the household, helping with chores and caring for the children. However, tensions rise when a group of Protestant rebels threaten the Baron's loyalty to the Emperor and the family's safety. The Dove in the Eagle's Nest explores themes of loyalty, family, and faith, as well as the political and religious conflicts of the time. Yonge's vivid descriptions of life in a medieval castle and the characters' struggles to navigate their loyalties and beliefs make for a compelling read. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
