Nobody ever asked Priya Nair what she saw. She wrote it down anyway.
For eleven weeks Priya was the third pair of hands in the best camp in the sport. She held a scapula steady at seven every morning, signed for the deliveries, made the appointments, and was told often and kindly that she reminded everyone of Nadia Walsh at that age. Nobody in that building ever asked her a question that was not clinical.
So when the fight was over she did the first thing she had ever decided entirely for herself, and took a job three thousand miles away, in a converted tyre warehouse with one folding table and a bulb in a wire cage, working for a fighter the sport had already finished with.
Marco Ramos lost that fight fairly. Five full rounds, no stoppage, to a better prepared man on the night. What ended his career was not the loss. It was the men who had quietly financed his last camp, and a commission that decided the taint of who paid for him was enough on its own. He fights unsanctioned now, for cash, buying back a debt on the only terms anyone will give him.
He assumes she has come to look at the wreck.
She arrives certain that a commission does not strip a man's living over nothing.
They are both wrong, and it takes her four months and a box of her own old photographs to find out how badly. Because Priya kept records nobody ever asked her to keep, and in a notebook from a camp she left in the spring there is a name, a date, and a delivery that should never have been signed for.
It is proof of a fix that was arranged around that fight and never needed. It is enough to have the result voided. Enough to strip a champion of a win he earned honestly, hand Marco a technicality he does not believe he deserves, and bring a licence review down on the people who trained her.
And the men still collecting Marco's debt have stopped asking him for money. They have started telling him which round to go down in.
Priya has spent her whole career being decided for, by people who were not unkind about it and never once thought to ask. She is not going to do it to the one man who has ever actually looked at her.
So she puts the folder in his hands. And she does not open it for him.
