Hidden in the deepest layer of the machine, keyed to Kael's own genetic signature, is a protocol that allows one amendment to the fundamental instructions governing the Construct. One sentence. Written over fourteen years. A sentence that could change everything - or nothing at all.
But Kael is not alone in his discovery. Deep in the forests of Europe, a hidden settlement of the last unplugged humans has been watching him for years. Among them is Lyra - the woman from his dreams - and a community that has spent sixty years wondering whether it is an experiment, a mercy, or a museum.

Because the machine is not trying to stop him. It is trying to learn from him. And the choice it offers is not good versus evil. It is the fog - a world where humanity is managed into safety forever - or the zoo - a world where a few are preserved, wild and unmanaged, like exhibits in a cage that keeps something alive.
Kael must decide what freedom is worth, and whether the man who sacrificed himself so his son could live would want that son to sacrifice himself too.
