Taking the advice of the swineherd, he seized the hind legs of the obstinate, ill-tempered pig, and trundled him oiT amidst peals of laughter from the bystanders. There was another strange sight in the same neighborhood--that of shaving mules and asses. Three or four persons attacked one animal at the same time, taking good care to protect themselves from the anger of the mule by tying its fore and hind legs tightly together with a grass rope, and pressing its nose between two wooden levers. They used very sharp shears, one blade of which lay flat against the animal s skin, while the other played upon the first, being slightly inclined towards it. The poor beasts looked very foolish and uncomfortable. ' Beggars attended the fair in great numbers. clad in their most disgusting garments, and delighting in displaying their most dreadful deformities. One old woman, in a short, patched, red petticoat, bare brown legs and feet, thin gray hair hanging in two scanty braids behind, and wearing about her forehead and ears ponderous gilded ornaments, drew near the pony carriage, dragging by the bridle an unwilling ass.
