The book titled The Doctrine of Formal Discipline in the Light of Experimental Investigation written by Nellie P. Hewins is a comprehensive study of the concept of formal discipline in education. The author examines the traditional belief that certain subjects, such as Latin and mathematics, have a transferable effect on intellectual abilities, enabling students to perform better in other areas of study. The book provides a critical analysis of the doctrine of formal discipline, using empirical evidence to challenge its validity. The author draws on various experiments and studies to show that there is no evidence to support the idea that learning one subject necessarily improves performance in other unrelated areas. Hewins also explores the historical context of the doctrine of formal discipline, tracing its origins and development in educational theory. She examines the various arguments put forth in support of the doctrine and critiques them in light of contemporary research. The book is a valuable resource for educators and researchers interested in the history of educational theory and the empirical study of learning. It provides a clear and concise analysis of the doctrine of formal discipline and its relevance to modern educational practice. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
