On January 19, 2001, firefighters entered a burning apartment in Athens, Georgia, and found University of Georgia law student Tara Louise Baker dead one day before her twenty-fourth birthday.
The fire had been set deliberately. Inside the damaged home, investigators encountered evidence of sexual assault and a sustained violent attack. The scene had been compromised. Biological material collected during the original examination remained stored within the case file, waiting for forensic science to advance.
For more than two decades, Tara's family pressed for renewed scrutiny as leads weakened and the investigation passed between agencies. Georgia eventually enacted the Coleman-Baker Act, named for Tara and Rhonda Sue Coleman, giving families a formal route to request review of dormant homicide cases. When the GBI Cold Case Unit examined Tara's evidence again, advances in forensic biology brought investigators to Edrick Lamont Faust.
Private author Sam Shadow reconstructs Tara's life, the original police work, her family's long campaign, and the 2026 criminal trial. Using courtroom testimony, police interviews, forensic findings, family statements, and the surviving public record, he follows the evidence from the burned apartment through the DNA analysis that transformed a twenty-three-year investigation into a prosecution. Little is known about Sam Shadow, a private author who writes about true crime and controversial internet figures. His books reconstruct complicated cases through extensive research and close attention to chronology.
The DNA Waited 23 Years is a detailed narrative account of the Tara Baker murder, her family's struggle for answers, the science that revived one of Athens's longest-running cold cases, and the courtroom dispute over what the surviving evidence could prove. It is written for readers of solved cold cases, forensic investigations, criminal trials, and meticulously reconstructed true crime.
