The Divinity of Jesus in the Book of Colossians
In the book of Colossians, Dr. Maxwell Shimba emphasizes the profound divinity of Jesus Christ, which is foundational to the Apostle Paul's message. Colossians 1:15-17 presents Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. Dr. Shimba highlights that this description affirms Jesus' role as the perfect representation of God, not merely a reflection but the exact essence of God's nature. As the firstborn, Jesus is preeminent in both rank and authority over all creation, signifying His eternal existence and active involvement in the creation of everything, visible and invisible.
Dr. Shimba also elaborates on Colossians 1:19, where Paul asserts, For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him. This verse underscores that the fullness of God's attributes, nature, and power dwells entirely in Jesus, affirming His complete divinity. Dr. Shimba explains that this fullness indicates that Jesus is fully God in every sense, possessing all the characteristics of a deity. This truth is essential for understanding the incarnation-God becoming a man in the person of Jesus-while retaining His divine essence and nature.
Finally, Dr. Shimba examines Colossians 2:9, which further reinforces Jesus' divine nature: For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. Dr. Shimba notes that this verse powerfully asserts the unity of Jesus' divine and human natures. Jesus is fully divine, yet He took on human form to accomplish God's redemptive plan. This union of divinity and humanity in Jesus is what qualifies Him to be the perfect mediator between God and man, bringing reconciliation through His sacrificial death.
