Discourses On Intemperance is a book written by John Gorham Palfrey that was first published in 1827. The book is a collection of sermons that were delivered in the Church in Brattle Square, Boston on April 5, 1827, which was the day of the annual fast, and on April 8, the Lord's Day following. The sermons in this book focus on the issue of intemperance, specifically alcoholism, and its negative effects on society. Palfrey argues that intemperance is a serious problem that needs to be addressed by the church and society as a whole. He uses biblical references and historical examples to support his arguments and to call for action against this social problem. The book is divided into two parts, with the first sermon focusing on the causes and consequences of intemperance, and the second sermon focusing on the solutions to the problem. Palfrey argues that the only way to combat intemperance is through education, moral persuasion, and the implementation of laws and regulations that restrict the sale and consumption of alcohol.Overall, Discourses On Intemperance is an important historical document that sheds light on the issue of alcoholism in the early 19th century and provides insight into the efforts of the church and society to combat this social problem. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
