Academic research has explored the enduring and significant concept of the 'public sphere' through various theories. This paper aims, above all, to examine the 'arena model' developed by the two sociologists Jürgen Gerhards and Friedhelm Neidhardt. Gerhards and Neidhardt developed the arena model to shed light on the concept of the 'public sphere'. But does the 'arena' model also explain the structures of the public sphere in Web 2.0? This paper will examine both the 'arena' model and the characteristics of the social web in detail. In order to address the question of whether Gerhards' and Neidhardt's conceptions of the public sphere have explanatory power for Web 2.0, this paper will focus on the conditions of access for actors in the public sphere, the levels of the public sphere, the roles of spokespersons and the stages of the process.
