The disclosure of the origin of genetic resources and/or associated traditional knowledge in patent applications is a subject of debate. This requirement stems from the need to implement the principles of the Convention on Biological Diversity, adopted in 1992, which place genetic resources under the sovereignty of States. As these resources are used on a large scale in the field of biotechnology for the invention of new products in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, horticultural and food sectors, they are subject to patenting by companies in developed countries that possess the technological know-how.
