The foregoing bears specially on the existence of moral evil as it is manifest to us. But the question may be asked, why should physical evil have been entailed as its consequence so generally, and to such an extent as actually ex ists? Which inquiry is not only natural, but very important, and demands consideration. We may be quite sure that an all-wise and benevolent Being would not appoint or allow anything which should cause suffering or trouble without sufficient motive. And it behoves us as rational creatures to ascertain, as far as practicable, what the motive may be in this case. There can be no hesitation in admitting that the physical or natural laws which we recognise were ordained by God as most appropriate and beneficial in their operation for the whole universe. Neither can we doubt that in infinite wisdom they may be adapted, under Divine control, for the discipline of fallen and sinning humanity. For though, in uncovenanted mercy, God maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust--and we often see the wicked flourish as the green bay-tree--we are assured that, in answer to true, earnest prayer, He can, and will, so order, by unseen spiritual forces, the circumstances of those who love and fear Him, and so instruct them in the use of the laws of nature (as we call them) as to avert or avoid dreaded evils; or...
