Dictorum Factorumque Memorabilium, or Memorable Words and Deeds, is a collection of historical anecdotes and moral exempla compiled by Valerius Maximus during the reign of Tiberius. This edition presents the nine books of the collection, restored to a better order. The work provides a valuable insight into Roman society, values, and historical understanding during the early Imperial period. Valerius Maximus drew upon a wide range of sources to illustrate virtues and vices, using stories from Roman history and, to a lesser extent, foreign cultures. The anecdotes are organized thematically, covering topics such as courage, justice, piety, and moderation.
