There are unbelievers, agnostics and atheists who experience and practise love without necessarily having an awareness of God. However, they have an awareness of Love and even if they never acknowledge God in the traditional manner, what matters is that they have chosen the Way of Love, and-insofar as names are purely labels-Love is (almost) just another name for God. When John says, 'God is love' (1 John 4:8, ESV), he is making the point that love is not simply something God has or does, but who he is-at his very core. In this view, God is the Source and standard of all love. His love surpasses our narrow, conditional conception; it is unconditional which means that he's less interested in what we think about him and more concerned about our attitude toward others.
To suggest otherwise would be to bring him down to our level.
