One of the most important firsthand accounts of sixteenth-century Brazil, Gabriel Soares de Sousa's Descriptive Treatise on Brazil in 1587 offers an exceptionally detailed portrait of Portuguese America during the first century of colonization.

A Portuguese settler who lived for many years in Bahia, Gabriel Soares de Sousa wrote from direct experience of colonial society. His work combines geographical description, observations on navigation and settlement, accounts of Indigenous peoples, and extensive information on plants, animals, agriculture, trade, warfare, and the natural environment. Few surviving sources provide such a broad and concrete view of Brazil at this early stage of Portuguese occupation.

The work is divided into two major parts. The first surveys the Brazilian coastline, describing rivers, capes, bays, reefs, ports, settlements, and navigational conditions from northern Brazil toward the south. The second turns to Bahia and the Bay of All Saints, the region Gabriel Soares knew best, offering a remarkably rich account of its landscape, economy, peoples, flora, fauna, and colonial life.

More than a geographical description, the Treatise is also a document of the colonial world itself. Gabriel Soares writes as a landholder, sugar-mill owner, municipal official, and participant in Portuguese expansion. His descriptions therefore reveal not only the territory and societies he encountered, but also the assumptions, interests, ambitions, and prejudices of the colonizing society to which he belonged.

For historians, anthropologists, students of Indigenous history, environmental history, colonial studies, and the history of the Portuguese Atlantic, the work remains an indispensable primary source.

This English edition seeks to make Gabriel Soares de Sousa's text more accessible to international readers while preserving its historical character. The translation retains, wherever possible, the archaic tone of the original, respects the terminology and nomenclature used by the author, preserves variations in Indigenous-derived names and expressions, and avoids silently correcting inconsistencies present in the source text.

Written in the sixteenth century and still surprisingly difficult to find in complete and accessible English translation, Descriptive Treatise on Brazil in 1587 is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the formation of colonial Brazil and the world encountered-and transformed-by the Portuguese in South America.
