Der Freischutz is a romantic opera in three acts, written by Friedrich Kind and first performed in 1821. The story is set in rural Germany and follows the young forester Max, who is in love with Agathe, the daughter of the head ranger. In order to win her hand in marriage, Max must prove his skill as a marksman by winning a shooting contest. However, he is plagued by doubts and turns to the evil Kaspar for help. Kaspar gives Max magic bullets that are guaranteed to hit their target, but in return, Max must agree to give Kaspar his soul. As the contest approaches, Max must confront the consequences of his deal with Kaspar and fight for his love and his soul. Der Freischutz is known for its haunting melodies and supernatural themes, and is considered a masterpiece of German Romantic opera.
