The Delsarte Recitation Book and Directory, written by Elsie M. Wilbor and first published in 1890, is a comprehensive guide to the art of public speaking and recitation. The book is based on the teachings of Franois Delsarte, a 19th-century French actor and teacher who developed a system of physical and vocal expression that was widely influential in the performing arts of his time. The book is divided into two parts. The first part provides an overview of Delsarte's system of gesture, posture, and vocalization, as well as practical exercises for developing these skills. The second part of the book is a directory of recitations, speeches, and dialogues suitable for performance in a variety of contexts, from the classroom to the stage. The directory includes selections from classic literature, poetry, and drama, as well as original pieces by the author and other contemporary writers. Each selection is accompanied by notes on its historical and cultural context, as well as suggestions for performance and interpretation. Overall, the Delsarte Recitation Book and Directory is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the art of public speaking and performance, providing both theoretical background and practical guidance for mastering the skills of gesture, posture, and vocal expression. This Book Is In English. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
