His desk is an island of chaos in the middle of the room. Nautical charts, some dating back to the late eighteenth century, are layered like strata of silt. They are stained with dampness, the ink bleeding into the fibers of the paper until the coastlines look like ink-blot tests. He tracks the soundings with a trembling index finger, tracing the deepening blues of the bathymetric maps, his gaze lingering on the abyssal plains where the numbers suggest depths that no human lung could ever hope to survive.
To anyone else, these charts would be cold data. To Yusuf, they are a map of a kingdom. He leans back, the wood of his chair groaning under the weight of his stillness. His eyes, rimmed with the exhaustion of a man who has traded sleep for vigil, fix on the window. Through the glass, the sea is a slate-gray expanse, churning under a restless wind. It is loud tonight. The waves strike the jagged teeth of the cliffs with a wet, percussive thud that vibrates through the foundation of the house, rattling the glassware in the cupboards. He hears it again-a low-frequency vibration that bypasses his ears and settles in the marrow of his bones. It isn't the wind. It isn't the collision of water against stone. It is a cadence, a deliberate, beckoning hum that seems to resonate from the very center of the trench depicted on his desk.
Come.
Come.
