Deceit of the Light continues Lenore Grey's story in 1964 and her attempt to bring to a close L. A. Police Detectives Ian Marsh and Rick O'Grady's burglary investigation before Marsh learns she is a vampire. Deciding Preston Halifax's arrest will end their interest in her, she returns to the hospital where she left the comatose art thief after she bit him. While searching for his room, Lenore encounters an assault victim, sending her mind back to 1720 England and her struggle to overcome the physical and emotional scars left by her ordeal at her uncle's house.

No longer able to bear any man's touch, her rebuff of her husband Count de Poenari's advances has resulted in stunning and unexpected results.

Further complications arise with the return of Lenore's ardent suitor Thomas Broadmore, her discovery that a family member survived the devastating fire at Haverford Hall and is about to marry a soul-stealing succubus, and that ghosts of her siblings are stalling the rebuilding of Haverford.

Meanwhile, in 1964, O'Grady recalls his bizarre meeting with the extraterrestrial Marsh, whose difficulty adhering to protocol saved O'Grady's life. With the search for Ian's key stalled by Halifax's disappearance, they are even more determined to uncover the secret Lenore is trying so desperately to hide.
