Decatur and Coleridge explores the intersecting lives and legacies of two prominent figures: American naval hero Stephen Decatur and English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Through insightful essays and historical analysis, Carlos Gilman Calkins delves into the historical context surrounding Decatur's naval career and Coleridge's profound impact on Romantic literature.
The book examines Decatur's role in shaping early American naval strategy and his enduring influence as a symbol of national pride. It also explores Coleridge's intellectual contributions and his impact on philosophical and literary thought. By bringing together these seemingly disparate figures, Calkins offers a fresh perspective on 19th-century history and culture, inviting readers to consider the connections between heroism, intellectualism, and national identity. Decatur and Coleridge provides a valuable resource for students and scholars of American history, naval history, and Romantic literature.
