Dead Souls is a novel by the Russian author Nikolai Gogol. The book is considered a classic of Russian literature and is often cited as one of the greatest works of fiction ever written. The story follows the exploits of a man named Chichikov, who travels through rural Russia in the early 19th century, buying up the dead souls of serfs who have died since the last census. Chichikov's plan is to use these dead souls as collateral for a large loan, but his scheme is complicated by the various characters he encounters along the way, including corrupt officials, greedy landowners, and eccentric peasants.
