The Dead Heart: A Tale Of The Bastille is a historical novel written by Charles Gibbon. The story is set in Paris during the reign of King Louis XVI, a time when France was in turmoil due to the rising tensions between the aristocracy and the common people. The novel follows the life of Paul de Pierrefonds, a young nobleman who is imprisoned in the Bastille for his involvement in a plot against the king. While in prison, Paul meets a fellow prisoner named Henri de la Roche, who teaches him about the true nature of the French Revolution and the injustices that led to it. As Paul struggles to come to terms with his own role in the revolution, he must also confront the harsh realities of life in the Bastille, including the cruelty of the prison guards and the constant threat of death. The Dead Heart is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and redemption set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in French history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
