Many children work very hard to look like everything is easy - even when their minds are busy trying to keep up.
The Day Leo Stopped Pretending is a thoughtful and encouraging social-emotional learning story that helps children understand masking, executive function skills, and self-advocacy in a way that feels safe and relatable.
Leo is a bright and curious child, but keeping track of instructions, organizing tasks, and remembering what to do next can feel overwhelming. Instead of asking for help, Leo learns to copy what others are doing and pretend he understands. By the end of the day, his brain feels exhausted.
Everything begins to change when a caring teacher introduces a simple tool that helps Leo break big tasks into steps. With guidance, Leo discovers that planning, organizing, and managing tasks are skills that can be learned - and that he doesn't have to hide when things feel confusing.
This empowering read-aloud story gently introduces children to important executive functioning skills like planning, task management, focus, and asking for help. It also helps kids understand that pretending to be okay all the time can make learning harder.
Perfect for:
- children who feel overwhelmed by instructions
- kids who mask their struggles at school
- neurodivergent learners and sensitive thinkers
- parents and teachers teaching executive function skills
- classrooms focusing on social emotional learning (SEL)
With a compassionate message about accepting different learning styles, this story helps children build confidence, self-understanding, and the courage to ask for support.
A powerful conversation starter for homes, classrooms, and counseling settings.
