Most people outside France and Canada have never heard of the King's daughters. Yet history tells us about these courageous women that secured the new world for France.
In 1662 King Louis XIV of France knew he had a problem. New France (Canada) had 2500 men but very few white women. He heard stories of how successful England was in colonizing the area it had claimed. His soldiers were completing their time in the new world only to return to France. If France was to have a claim in this new world, they must establish colonies there, and it had to be fast. He devised a plan to sponsor young women and send them to New France to marry the men already there and hopefully keep the men there. Starting in 1663, the first group of women would sail across the Atlantic to begin their lives in the new world. Between 1663-1673 almost eight hundred women would journey to New France. They were very successful! Today two-thirds of the French Canadians can trace their lineage to these almost eight hundred women.
