The woods are more than haunted. They're hungry.
In the spring of 1961, nineteen-year-old Van wants nothing more than to relive his high school days with his closest friends. What better place to do that than a long neglected family cabin in the deepest part of the woods?
Ignoring the stories of ghosts and monsters, Van and his friends head out to a part of the woods left abandoned by humans. Where the trees reek of rot, and the past is drenched in death.
But none of that matters now. It's all just old ghost stories.
At first, the trip is everything Van hopes for. Hiking, exploring, reconnecting with his two best friends. Away from the world. Just the three of them, out in the forest, alone... but are they alone?
Footsteps. Strange noises. Whispers coming from the space between the trees. And that whistle. That horrible, screaming whistle.
Van can't help but wonder, was coming out here a mistake? And what really happened to the people who used to live in these woods?
Van may have to learn that some places are abandoned for a reason. Some ghost stories come with a grain of truth. And when you whistle in the woods, sometimes the darkness whistles back.
Each book in The Dreary Portent series is a standalone story. They can be read in any order.
