The Danegeld in France is an in-depth historical exploration of the systematic payments made by Frankish rulers to Viking invaders during the ninth and tenth centuries. Einar Joranson provides a rigorous examination of the fiscal and political mechanisms behind these tributes, known as Danegeld, and their profound impact on the Carolingian state and society.
The work meticulously details the various incursions of the Northmen and the subsequent negotiations that led to the imposition of heavy taxes on the French population. By analyzing contemporary chronicles and administrative records, Joranson illuminates the struggles of the Frankish monarchy to maintain order and defend its territories against persistent maritime threats. The study highlights the evolution of taxation and the shifting power dynamics between royal authority and local lords during this tumultuous period.
Essential for students of medieval history and those interested in Viking age diplomacy, The Danegeld in France offers a scholarly perspective on the economic realities of medieval warfare and the foundations of European public finance. This comprehensive study serves as a vital resource for understanding the complex relationship between the Frankish Empire and the Scandinavian raiders who shaped the course of European history.
