The poetry of Karen Gemma Brewer is unique, as this selection from across the range of her work shows. It has a quality of writing and control of language that is very perceptive, with an appeal to a whole cross-section of readers. Karen raises smiles and laughs both from the printed page and in one of her very entertaining performances, which are more like cabaret than not. It is too easy to think of her as a funny poet: she is and she isn't. Other 'comic' poets usually go for the laughter on the page and in their readings. To be sure, Karen's performance of her work to an audience is very entertaining. Her poetry is doubled-edged. It can be read and will create a smile without any reference by the reader to its underlying depth. This volume of selected poems offers an insight into the mind of the poet, and gives readers a chance to appreciate and love her work.
