This work is a thought-provoking exploration of the origins and teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormonism), including discussions of personal faith, belief, some concepts and practices of other religions, and concepts of evil as interpreted by the author. Written as a conversation between a father and his son, Jesse, the book (the author's second) is a personal reflection and explanation of the author's faith and beliefs, which are deeply influenced by the father's and son's attendance and membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
In the conversation, the father shares some of his perspectives, as well as some of the practices from various religions, especially Christianity and Islam. He also mentions other belief systems, including atheism. The book's focus is on doctrinal differences, historical origins, and moral considerations, as the author's discussion with his son combines instruction with Socratic-like dialogue to encourage the boy to express his own thoughts and perspectives. Jesse's many rhetorical as well as questioning statements and ideas are answered as the father feels able to do so. The ending emphasizes a spiritual experience that Jesse has in which his quest for understanding continues, to be responded to by different beings.
Doyle's book is a personal journey that the author feels is important to share with a wide audience. Presented plainly and filled with Bible stories that will be familiar to many people, the story will resonate with adults of many faiths who have talked with children about religion, faith, and living on Earth.
