This collection will explore the delicate and complex balance of Black femininity. This is questioned & demonstrated in the simple question of what Black is; Black 1, Black 2: Chickens & Pigs, Black 3: Burgundy & Chestnut, and Burgundy & Chestnut. In other poems, C. challenges mythology and the difference between myth and reality in A Few Words For The Goddesses. It also does this via appearance Just Hair (& Sister Solange), as well as through stories C. heard about the wonderful mothers and grandmothers that came before her When They Ask & If, as well as the Mammy/ Aunt Sarah/ Aunt Chloe archetype in The Archetype. The poems also follow the theme of becoming someone, in between being a Black woman. Finally, this collection shows C.'s interpretation of being not only Black, but being a woman, and understanding, tackling, and acknowledging her worth as such an identity.
