In the Iowa countryside, the corn keeps growing. People keep working. And some things are easier left unsaid.
Corn Sweat is a collection of twelve short stories and ten interwoven vignettes exploring contemporary rural life across the fields, gravel roads, river bottoms, small towns, bars, farms, and forgotten corners of Iowa and the Great Plains.
These are stories about ordinary people carrying things they rarely know how to say aloud.
Working men measure their lives in hours on the job and beers after quitting time. Friends drive country roads rather than admit they are struggling. Marriages buckle beneath loneliness, resentment, infidelity, and words that arrive too late, or never arrive at all. Childhood cruelty leaves marks that survive into adulthood. Old stories linger in the woods and cornfields. Modern technology brings new dangers into places that can otherwise seem untouched by time.
And through it all, the land remains.
Beautiful, productive, unforgiving, and strangely indifferent, the Midwestern landscape becomes a presence of its own. Corn grows by inches beneath the summer sun. Rivers quietly change course. Storms cross enormous skies. Coyotes call through the darkness. Generations work the same soil while family farms disappear and industrial agriculture transforms the prairie beneath their feet.
Between the twelve stories are ten brief poems, micro-stories, and prose vignettes that deepen the collection's portrait of the region. Sometimes darkly funny, sometimes unsettling, sometimes deeply personal, these interludes move through childhood memories, work, agriculture, family, loss, cultural absurdities, and the particular form of stoicism that teaches people to keep moving no matter what they carry inside.
Corn Sweat is regional realism without nostalgia. It looks beyond the postcard image of the American heartland to the complicated people who live there, the exhausted, the lonely, the stubborn, the wounded, the funny, the reckless, and the resilient.
At its heart is a question that echoes across generations of Midwestern life:
How much is really worth saying out loud when you've been taught that silence says enough?
Raw, intimate, darkly humorous, and at times haunting, Corn Sweat is a portrait of working-class survival and psychological isolation in a place where beauty and brutality can occupy the same stretch of road.
For readers drawn to literary short fiction, regional American writing, rural realism, working-class stories, and fiction that explores the hidden lives beneath seemingly ordinary people, Corn Sweat offers a stark journey into the contemporary Midwest.
