Abgesehen von griechischen Kolonien an der Schwarzmeerküste gab es im vorrömischen Nordanatolien keine urbanen Siedlungen. Nach Zusammenbruch des pontischen Königreichs gründete Pompeius 64/63 v. Chr. sieben Städte, um das eroberte Land in eine römische Provinz umzuwandeln. Die Städte lagen an Flussufern entlang der nordanatolischen Ost-West Route. Sie wurden nach dem Vorbild der griechischen Poleis organisiert. Die Frage, weshalb Pompeius diese Städte gegründet hat, wird kontrovers diskutiert. In der Forschung wird einerseits eine tiefgreifende Urbanisierung angezweifelt, andererseits ein ideologisches Movens für die Städtegründungen des Pompeius vermutet. Historische Quellen, die Einblicke in den Urbanisierungsprozess gewähren, sind rar, und die Archäologie der Region ist weitgehend unbekannt. Pompeiopolis ist die einzige pompeianische Neugründung, die durch Ausgrabungen archäologisch untersucht wurde. Feldforschungen (2006-016) haben unser Wissen über diese Stadt enorm erweitert. Der Band, der aus 25 Beiträgen besteht, präsentiert die Ergebnisse der Forschungen in Pompeiopolis und kontextualisiert diese im (vor-)römischen Anatolien. Das Buch ist ein nützliches Nachschlagewerk für Wissenschaftler und Studierende, die an der Archäologie Kleinasiens interessiert sind.
