Domesticated Angora rabbits are prized for their long, silky fur. The fur from these rabbits is highly sought after because it can be turned into yarn and used to create luxurious winter wear. Angora rabbits stand out from other species due to their small stature and huge, perked ears.
Ankara, the capital of Turkey and originally known as Angora, is where the Angora rabbit first appeared in recorded history. The breed was officially recognized for the first time in the 18th century, but its existence is likely considerably older.

The fur from Angora rabbits was used to manufacture luxurious garments for the upper class of Turkey. Count de Vergennes, the French envoy to Turkey in the 18th century, is rumored to have brought Angora rabbits to France after being given a pair as a present. From then, the breed traveled throughout Europe and arrived in the early 20th century in the United States.
Rabbit lovers all around the world now keep Angora rabbits as pets, show animals, and fiber animals. The English Angora, French Angora, Giant Angora, and Satin Angora are the four official types of Angora rabbits.
Although each breed is distinctive in its own way, they share a need for frequent grooming to maintain their long, silky fur and keep it from matting.
