. . . Collected Poems from Here and There by Jervis Underwood shares with readers a life well lived through poetry well crafted. Reading these poems is like taking a trip, only you don't know whether you are going to be going down the block or across country. The poems have their own surprises, their own revelations and you are pleased you traveled with them. The author narrates from time to time, and you have the feeling you are reading the memoir of a good friend, then you read the poem and you remember this is a book of poetry and you are delighted with his fine craftsmanship. He uses many poetic forms, and he tells many stories, reveals numerous feelings, expresses insights you will treasure. A copy of On Being Eighty belongs in my wallet. You won't be surprised when music works its way into these poems; you may be surprised at the humor. It is delicious. And you are treated to a thorough exercise in the Fibonacci sequence. Jervis offers various forms he has based on the sequence - J. Paul Holcomb, The Poet from Double Oak.
