It had to happen. Not in the way you think. Not the way experts said it would, but slowly over the years. Things went from okay to not so good to .... there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It started out of spite and anger. A boy spurned by his father. A small thing. But as you know, small things, left unchecked, can grow.
Some were prepared. Not because they knew the end was near but for other, more selfish reasons. Most knew nothing. Ignorance ran rampant. Hide your head and trust your elected officials and wait for a better future.
The spurned boy stepped forward. A journey started by Intentions of self appeasement.
Then a Prophet rose. At first, he took on the mantle for revenge but circumstances shifted. Voices took up residency in his head. Nightmares drove the boy to the brink of madness. Save the earth, demons raged in his sleep.
Revenge morphed into desperation. Centuries of abundant resources pushed the world toward undeniable destruction. To save a planet, the Prophet needed to change the world's habits. Forces raised to do the hard work and fight against deniers.
But still those few fought. Those who tried, tried their hardest. They went to the fence for civilization. A gallant effort but they too were overwhelmed. The might of the many crushed the will of the few. Tho misguided at times, with their tin foil hat mentality, they were for a brief time, heroes, they alone stood on guard for thee.
Even when the earth shook they thought we still had a chance. When the volcanoes erupted and dust choked the skies, they figured we could adjust. Fight on. Civilization will not go easily.
Then the unthinkable. The earth wouldn't quick shaking. The tunnel grew dark. The light at the end of a very long tunnel flickered on humanity and then, violently blew out.
Was the spurned boy too late or was he wrong? History will write his story. Which side will he be remembered?
