It's the same thing every year. Several publishing houses are organizing to set up a romance festival two weeks before Christmas so that husbands can give gifts to their wives, and wives to their friends. This event attracts both a lot of people and a lot of money. Writers gorge themselves on copyright and notoriety. It is an opportunity for them to show themselves to readers, to be discovered by those who do not know them, and to build a larger readership. It's a golden godsend, and that surely explains why my editor doesn't understand my decision not to go.
I sigh as I look at his head displayed close-up on my screen. Matthew never knew how to use a computer. All his colleagues laugh at this thirty-something who does not understand technology. We are in videoconference, but the focal length of his webcam makes it a bit blurry. However, I do not point it out to him and concentrate on our discussion.
