China in Line and Color is a collection of vintage children's book illustrations of China, 1932-1965. Filled with beautiful artwork in pen and ink, watercolor, and pastel, this volume includes illustrations by Kurt Wiese, Lucille Douglass, Helen Sewell, Ninon MacKnight, and Miroslav Sasek. The illustrations bring to life the stories in each book and provide cultural and historical insight into the lives of Chinese people from past generations. Elizabeth Foreman Lewis, who wrote most of the novels represented here, lived in China for a number of years and was a renowned writer, winning the prestigious 1933 Newbery Medal for her novel, Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze. The reader will undoubtedly appreciate this fascinating collection of illustrations, and perhaps be enticed to read the books from which they originated.
