When I married into an Iowa farm family I found that the staple treat for Saturday morning, Summer mornings, pretty much any morning visit any day you don't have to go to work was cheesebread and coffee.Not cheesy-bread or garlic bread like chain pizza places offer as appetizers. Toast made from Grandma's homemade bread, with a slice of cheese instead of peanut butter or jelly. An invitation for cheesebread from my Mother-in-law or a great aunt basically meant a visit in the kitchen or if the morning was nice, on the porch. Memories and laughs, nostalgia and shares sorrows. To be sure, sometimes difficult conversations about family struggles or decisions, but more often than not, just a friendly visit. My hope with this book is that each chapter will be like a friendly visit over coffee. Hopefully worth a chuckle or a sigh. This book represents some of the lighter, non-political stuff that I wrote for the Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper and the Mapleton PRESS. I hope it also accurately represents some of the beauty of life in small town Iowa, a lost part of Americana.
