Checkers with Pop Pop: An Otis Story

Ten-year-old Otis loves many things - school, his friends, and especially his time with Pop Pop. Their checker games, family stories, and ordinary Saturdays have always been a special part of his life.

But when Pop Pop starts forgetting things, Otis notices that not everything feels the same. Stories change. Names get mixed up. Some days Pop Pop knows exactly who Otis is, and some days he doesn't.

At first, Otis tries to help by correcting, reminding, and even testing Pop Pop's memory. But little by little, he learns something harder and more important: love does not depend on getting every answer right.

With warmth, humor, and an honest look at Alzheimer's disease, Checkers with Pop Pop follows one boy as he learns that he can miss the way things used to be while still loving the person sitting beside him now.

A gentle chapter book about family, memory, changing relationships, and discovering that sometimes the most meaningful thing you can do is simply stay at the table.
