Lancaster, the county town of Lancashire, achieved city status in 1937. Dominating the landscape is the castle, which dates from the eleventh century. The scene of many trials and executions, its Crown Court is still a working court and prison. Royal connections with the Duchy of Lancaster also go back to the Middle Ages. The town prospered as it became one of the busiest ports in England with strong links to the slave trade. The city centre has fine Georgian buildings, museums such as the Maritime Museum and Judges Lodgings, and a canal running through it. The picturesque Williamson Park, home to the iconic Ashton Memorial, and the River Lune Millennium Park reflect former industries. Today Lancaster is a vibrant university city, host to many festivals throughout the year and the Grand Theatre is one of the country's oldest working theatres.
