When Neel Watson's grandfather, J.J. Watson passes away the young boy was devastated. The two of them were constant companions almost from the day Neel was born. Neel loved to sit and listen to J.J.'s stories from the past, but there were two periods from J.J.'s past that he would never share with the family. Neel realized he may never know what happened to his grandfather during those times, until the reading of the will when Neel is given a note left him by his grandfather; very short and very cryptic. Neel is led to two journals written by J.J. that tell of the times in his grandfather's life that had not been reveled to anyone in the family. Upon reading the first one Neel learns of J.J.'s experiences during the civil war, something he was very happy to finally know, but life intercedes and Neel doesn't get to read the second journal until years later. The depression is creeping up on the nation and Neel and his family must do what they can to survive. When things start getting real bad and Neel loses his job he realizes he never read the second journal. He retrieves it from its hiding place and is mesmerized by the tale it weaves. Neel, having lived on the family farm all his life had few bills and had amassed a bit of cash during his working years. Ever since acquiring the journals he had dreamed of following the travels of his grandfather. Now he realized that if he doesn't do that now, He may never get to do so. That's when Neel starts out on an adventure that is sure to change his life, and the lives of his family for generations to come.
